The Institute of Budo Studies offers courses in kendo, iaido, and kobudo. Our focus is on the preservation and dissemination of these arts as they are prescribed by the Nippon Budo Kyogikai (Japan Budo Association). To support this mission, we go beyond technical training and engage in the study of the historical and cultural foundations of budo. This broader context helps practitioners understand not only how techniques are executed, but also why they were developed and when they should be applied.
To further support this process, we offer instruction in classical arts from various historical periods, allowing students to examine the evolution of budo from its medieval origins, through the Japanese renaissance, to its modern forms. Gaining this historical perspective enhances both the technical execution and the mindset required for authentic practice, while also offering a rich experience in cultural immersion.
In addition to technical, philosophical, and historical study, the Institute of Budo Studies emphasizes the development of a strong mind and body through martial arts training. The challenges encountered in practice foster resilience, self-discipline, and personal growth. Because the movements are rooted in natural body mechanics, they promote physical conditioning with minimal risk of injury when performed correctly. This makes Japanese martial arts accessible and beneficial for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
At the Institute of Budo Studies, we believe that martial arts are not just a physical activity, but a way of life. We welcome new members to join us on this path of learning, self-improvement, and cultural discovery through the martial arts.
